MISTRA roundtable to explore practical steps for South Africa’s PGM-powered hydrogen economy
South Africa has ambitious strategies for green hydrogen, critical minerals and beneficiation. The challenge now is translating these into investment, industrial development and jobs.
The Mapungubwe Institute for Strategic Reflection (MISTRA), together with Creamer Media, will host the 2026 MISTRA Annual Platinum Group Metals (PGM) Roundtable as an online webinar on Tuesday, 17 November 2026.
Under the theme “A transition from strategic aspirations to execution reality: Accelerating South Africa’s PGM-Powered Hydrogen Economy”, the roundtable will examine the practical steps needed to move from policy ambition to coordinated implementation.
South Africa’s PGM resources, renewable energy potential and industrial capabilities provide a foundation for participation in the emerging hydrogen economy. Realising this opportunity requires stronger links between policy, financing, infrastructure, local manufacturing and skills development.
The discussion will focus on:
- Moving from policy frameworks to coordinated implementation.
- Unlocking investment and financing for hydrogen and PGM beneficiation projects.
- Strengthening South Africa’s hydrogen and fuel cell ecosystem.
- Building the skills and workforce required for the hydrogen economy.
- Improving collaboration between government, industry, emerging companies and training institutions.
- Using South Africa’s PGM advantage to support domestic industrialisation and economic opportunities.
The annual roundtable will bring together stakeholders to consider the barriers to implementation and the partnerships needed to accelerate progress.
