SANTIAGO - Major mining operations in northern Chile continued as usual on Wednesday despite the heavy rains that hit the northern part of the South American country.

President Jose Antonio Kast visited the northern region of Antofagasta on Wednesday to assess the damage caused by the heavy rainfall, which led to flooding and landslides.

“We are on the ground; the various ministers are working in their respective areas - primarily, as I mentioned, on connectivity, public health, education and social development - to gather information and target resources effectively. Resources are scarce,” Kast told reporters.

State-owned miner Codelco and BHP - which runs the Escondida mine, the world's largest copper deposit - told Reuters that there were no changes in their operations.

Antofagasta Minerals added that it was “constantly monitoring weather conditions” to ensure the safety of its workers.
