A mine worker died underground at a mine near Utrecht in KwaZulu-Natal, Emergency Medical Services said on Wednesday.

The accident happened at around 05:00, but its cause and exactly what happened was still unknown, said spokesperson Robert Mckenzie.

"The man, estimated to be about 31 years of age, was the only casualty in the localised accident," he said.

Police and mine authorities were investigating the incident.
