Transnet Rail Infrastructure Manager (TRIM) hosted a Level Crossing Awareness Campaign in Saldanha and Vredenburg on Friday, 9 October 2026, as part of activities marking October Transport Month.

The awareness campaign brought together TRIM, the Saldanha Bay Municipality, law enforcement agencies, emergency services, community representatives and other relevant partners and stakeholders, to promote safety at level crossings and encourage responsible behaviour around railway infrastructure.

October Transport Month provides an opportunity to highlight the importance of safe, reliable and efficient transport systems while raising awareness about the responsibilities of all road and rail users.

The level crossing awareness campaign also forms part of Transnet's ongoing commitment to reducing incidents and improving safety at railway crossings. The initiative will focus on educating motorists, pedestrians, cyclists and other road users about the dangers associated with level crossings and the importance of obeying railway safety rules.

“Safety is a shared responsibility. As we observe October Transport Month, we are using this opportunity to engage directly with communities and remind all road users of the importance of exercising caution around railway crossings. A moment of impatience can have devastating consequences, and we urge everyone to stop, look and listen before crossing,” said Moshe Motlohi, Chief Executive of Transnet Rail Infrastructure Manager.

Level crossings are points where road and rail traffic intersect, making vigilance and responsible behaviour essential. Members of the public are reminded to stop, look and listen before crossing railway lines, obey all warning signs and signals, and never attempt to cross when a train is approaching.

The participation of the Saldanha Bay Municipality and other stakeholders highlights the importance of collaboration in promoting transport safety. By working together, Transnet, local government, law enforcement, emergency services and communities can strengthen awareness and help prevent avoidable incidents.

The campaign will include engagements with members of the public, the distribution of railway safety information and awareness activities at identified level crossings in Saldanha and Vredenburg.

TRIM remains committed to working with government, stakeholders and communities to promote a culture of safety and responsible use of South Africa's rail infrastructure, and urges communities to make safety a priority throughout October Transport Month and beyond.
