PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Iron-ore major Fortescue Metals has reported a more than 300-million-tonne increase to the mineral resource base along its Chichester Range.

The miner told shareholders that the increased tonnage included additional resources immediately north of the Cloudbreak and Christmas Creek operations, which had been delineated by recent drilling up-dip of existing mining operations.

The company added about 70-million tonnes at the Cloudbreak operation and a further 46-million at Christmas Creek.

The mineral resources were at, or very near surface, and would likely have a low strip ratio. Fortescue said that these resources would now be incorporated into the mine plan at each operation.

Meanwhile, some 35 km south-east of Christmas Creek, a new mineral resource of 106-million tonnes had been defined at Kutayi, and a re-estimated mineral resource at Mt Lewin had increased this mineral resource by 82-million tonnes, to 280-million tonnes.

Fortescue said on Thursday that exploration activities would continue along the Chichester Range.
