Firm uses Transport Month to reflct on '70 years in motion'

OLD FAITHFUL From one truck (pictured) in 1956 to a sophisticated transport and logistics operation, Cargo Carriers' journey reflects an industry that has continually had to adapt and will continue to do so
During Transport Month 2026, the spotlight falls once again on an industry that is often only noticed when something goes wrong – yet plays a fundamental role in keeping the economy moving – says integrated supply chains and logistics solutions provider Cargo Carriers.
The company notes that this year’s Transport Month carries particular significance. Seventy years after founder Des Bolton put his first truck, “Old Faithful”, on the road in 1956, Cargo Carriers “remains firmly rooted in an industry that connects South Africa’s manufacturers, fuel industries and construction projects, helping to keep businesses operating and the communities they serve supplied”.
Cargo Carriers operates a large fleet of trucks delivering specialised transport and logistics solutions across sectors such as fuel, chemicals, mining, powders, steel and sugar. “Behind these operations is a simple reality: an efficient and reliable road freight network is essential to keeping businesses supplied, industries operating and the economy moving.”
However, modern transport is no longer just about moving goods from one destination to another.
“Customers increasingly expect logistics partners to help manage complexity, control costs, improve efficiency and respond to changing market conditions. This has made innovation, technology and supply-chain expertise increasingly important to the way transport businesses operate.”
Cargo Carriers notes that requires that logistics partners embrace technology that supports fleet management, route planning, fuel efficiency and operational control, while continually looking for effective ways to solve increasingly complex logistics requirements.
Importantly, the focus on innovation and operational excellence should also extends to safety.
“With Cargo Carriers handling hazardous goods and specialised loads, maintaining high standards across safety, health, environment and quality remains fundamental. Technology can improve visibility and control, but it is the people behind the operation; drivers, technicians, operations teams and management, [that] ultimately make safe transport possible.”
Against this backdrop,Transport Month provides an opportunity for government and industry to reflect on what is needed to strengthen South Africa’s transport sector and its contribution to the economy.
The company points out that such a progression would require more than investment in roads, vehicles and infrastructure, arguing that it would also require collaboration between government and business, continued investment in skills and people, the responsible adoption of technology and a “shared commitment to making transport safer, more reliable and more efficient”.
It cites its commitment to the sector, as an example, noting that it has been shaped over seven decades of changing economic conditions, technologies and customer expectations. “From one truck in 1956 to a sophisticated transport and logistics operation serving some of South Africa’s most critical industries, the journey reflects an industry that has continually had to adapt and will continue to do so.”
The company stresses that Transport Month 2026 is an opportunity to recognise the people and businesses that keep goods moving, and the contribution that they make to keeping industries productive and the country connected.
