Better connected operational data can help mining companies to improve water management across the mine life-cycle by enabling faster, more informed decision-making, says data, AI and advanced analytics company N4mative business development strategic adviser Sash Nair.

While water infrastructure is becoming more connected, many mining operations still rely on historical reporting to make operational decisions, she says.

Digital twins – which are virtual, real-time digital copies of physical assets, systems or processes – provide a representation of water infrastructure, consequently enabling operators to monitor assets, simulate operating scenarios and assess the downstream impact of decisions before implementation.

“A digital twin isn’t simply a visual model. It becomes a decision-support environment that helps operators understand not only what’s happening today, but what is likely to happen tomorrow," she adds.

By analysing thousands of operational variables simultaneously, AI can identify patterns that would otherwise go unnoticed, resulting in mines predicting equipment failures, optimising treatment processes and improving asset reliability.

“The real value of AI isn’t replacing operators. It’s giving them earlier insight so they can intervene before a small issue becomes an operational problem,” she adds, noting that while many mining operations generate large volumes of data, the operational, maintenance, environmental and asset information is often spread across multiple systems.

N4mative CEO Kevin Gungiah says many mining organisations are not short of data on water management, but of connected data.

“Integrated platforms that bring this information together provide a single operational view, allowing teams to detect anomalies earlier, understand relationships between assets and make decisions with greater confidence,” he says.

Nair adds that these connected platforms also support environmental compliance through continuous monitoring, automated reporting and early warning alerts as operational thresholds are approached, which, in turn, enables mines to manage compliance risks proactively.

“Compliance shouldn’t be something you measure after the fact. The opportunity is to monitor performance continuously and proactively manage operational and environmental risk,” she says.

Nair adds that predictive maintenance uses operational data to identify equipment degradation within water infrastructure before failures occur; this allows for planned interventions that improve the reliability of pumps, pipelines, valves and other critical equipment.

Gungiah elaborates that one of the biggest costs in mining is not always equipment failure – it is the time between a problem occurring and someone knowing about it.

Water Reuse

Nair says connected digital platforms can also improve water reuse and efficiency by providing visibility of water movement, infrastructure performance and operational demand across a mine. This enables operators to identify where water is consumed, recycled, lost or underused, supporting evidence-based decisions on water reuse.

“The opportunity isn’t simply to use less water. It’s to use the water you already have much more intelligently,” she says, adding that operational adoption, rather than technology, is the biggest barrier.

Bringing environmental, operational and maintenance data together into a single source of truth strengthens decision-making while improving the accuracy and credibility of environmental, social and governance reporting. When these aspects of data come together, organisations move from reporting on performance to actively improving it.

Nair adds that the greatest impact on mine water management over the next five years will come from connected ecosystems in which AI, digital twins, intelligent sensors and operational platforms continuously learn, predict and optimise operations. Further, as AI capabilities advance, she says success will depend on trusted data, human oversight and clear operational governance.

Mining’s next investment frontier is informational infrastructure that connects assets, people and data into a single decision-making environment, she says.

While water remains one of mining’s most valuable resources, she concludes that the greatest opportunity lies in how the intelligence surrounding it is connected, understood and acted on.
