China's coking coal futures prices surged by nearly 8% to hit their daily upper limits after a deadly coal mine accident in a major coal production hub sparked a wave of stringent safety checks across the region that tightened the supply outlook.

Eighty-two people were killed in a gas explosion at a coal mine in China's Shanxi province on Friday, the country's deadliest mining accident since at least 2009.

The most active coking coal contract on the Dalian Commodity Exchange soared 7.97% to 1 266.5 yuan a ton, or $186.76/t.
