Surface Mining

Surface mining is a method of extracting minerals and ores from deposits located close to the earth's surface, where the overburden (soil and rock covering the deposit) is removed to access the resource beneath. The technique encompasses several approaches, including open-pit mining, strip mining, mountaintop removal and quarrying, depending on the terrain, deposit geometry and mineral type. Surface mining is distinguished from underground mining by its reliance on excavation from the surface rather than tunnelling, making it generally more cost-effective and safer for large, shallow deposits. The method is widely used for extracting coal, iron ore, copper, gold, diamonds, manganese, phosphates and industrial minerals across Africa and globally. Operations typically involve drilling, blasting, loading and hauling using heavy equipment such as excavators, haul trucks, draglines and loaders. Surface mining offers higher productivity and lower operating costs per tonne than underground methods, but requires careful management of environmental impacts including land disturbance, water quality, dust and rehabilitation obligations. The sector is a major consumer of mining equipment, technology and services, driving demand for localisation, telematics and fleet management solutions. Regulatory frameworks in most jurisdictions mandate progressive rehabilitation, closure planning and community engagement to mitigate the long-term footprint of surface mining activities.
