Super Pit

The Super Pit, formally known as the Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines operation, is one of Australia's largest open-pit gold mines. It is located on the outskirts of Kalgoorlie in Western Australia, on the historic Golden Mile, one of the richest gold-bearing areas in the world. The mine stretches about 3.5 km in length, 1.5 km in width and more than 600 m in depth, making it visible from space. It has been operated at various times through joint ventures involving major gold miners, with Northern Star Resources holding a significant stake in recent years alongside other industry players. The operation produces several hundred thousand ounces of gold a year and remains central to Kalgoorlie's economy and identity. Ownership and operatorship have shifted over the decades as mining companies consolidated tenements on the Golden Mile. The pit has drawn tourism interest as well as ongoing scrutiny over noise, blasting and environmental effects on the surrounding community. Its long production history stretches back to gold discoveries in the region in the 1890s, with large-scale open-pit mining beginning in the 1980s to exploit lower-grade ore beneath earlier underground workings. The Super Pit remains a symbol of Australia's gold-mining heritage and a bellwether asset in merger and acquisition activity involving Kalgoorlie-based gold miners.
