South Asia

South Asia is a geographical region comprising the southern part of the Asian continent, typically defined to include India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan and the Maldives. The region is home to approximately 1.9-billion people, making it one of the most densely populated areas in the world. South Asia is characterised by diverse economies ranging from emerging industrial powers to least-developed nations, with India representing the largest economy and population centre. The region's economic profile is marked by significant agricultural activity, growing manufacturing sectors, expanding services industries and increasing technology hubs, particularly in software development and business-process outsourcing. Key development challenges include energy access, with hundreds of millions lacking reliable electricity, public-health infrastructure gaps and climate vulnerability. South Asia is a major focus for renewable-energy deployment, particularly solar power and battery-storage solutions, as governments seek to address energy poverty while meeting climate commitments. The region is also a priority area for international health initiatives, including vaccine distribution programmes coordinated by bodies such as the World Health Organisation. Major regional organisations include the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation, which promotes economic and cultural collaboration among member states. South Asia's strategic importance stems from its large consumer markets, young workforce and role as a bridge between the Middle East, Central Asia and South-East Asia.
