Solvay

Solvay is a Belgian multinational chemicals and advanced materials company with operations spanning specialty chemicals, industrial chemicals and rare-earth processing. It is headquartered in Brussels and operates production and research facilities across Europe, the Americas and Asia. The group is listed on Euronext Brussels and Paris, having split its activities between Solvay and a separately listed specialty-chemicals entity in recent years. Its product range includes soda ash, peroxides, silica, fluorochemicals and rare-earth compounds used in electronics, autocatalysts and permanent magnets. Solvay operates one of the few rare-earth separation plants outside China, notably in France, positioning it as a strategic Western alternative in critical-minerals supply chains. The company has pursued partnerships and sourcing agreements with miners developing rare-earth deposits outside China, including projects in Africa, to diversify feedstock away from Chinese-dominated supply. It generates revenue in the billions of euros and employs a workforce of several thousand across its global operations. Its portfolio includes multiple subsidiaries and brands serving the automotive, aerospace, agriculture and consumer-goods sectors. Solvay traces its origins to 1863, when Belgian chemist Ernest Solvay founded the company around an industrial soda-ash process, and it has since grown through acquisitions and diversification into one of Europe's most prominent chemical groups. Its involvement in rare-earth processing has drawn attention amid growing global efforts to secure critical-mineral supply chains for electric vehicles and clean-energy technologies.
