Singapore Exchange

Singapore Exchange is a securities and derivatives exchange based in Singapore that operates markets for equities, fixed income, currencies and commodities. The exchange, commonly known as SGX, is headquartered in the central business district of Singapore and serves as the primary stock exchange for the city-state. It was formed in 1999 through the merger of the Stock Exchange of Singapore and the Singapore International Monetary Exchange. SGX operates a multi-asset platform that includes listings of companies from Singapore and across Asia-Pacific, as well as a derivatives market that has become a regional hub for commodity futures and options. The exchange offers trading in iron ore, coking coal and other commodity derivatives that serve as pricing benchmarks for Asian markets, competing with exchanges such as the Dalian Commodity Exchange and Shanghai Futures Exchange in China. Its iron ore futures contracts in particular have gained liquidity as a hedging and price-discovery tool for steelmakers, miners and traders operating in the Asia-Pacific region. SGX is regulated by the Monetary Authority of Singapore and is itself a listed company. The exchange has pursued international partnerships and technology investments to maintain its position as a leading financial marketplace in South-East Asia. It plays a significant role in capital formation for the region and in providing risk-management tools for commodity-intensive industries.
