Shanxi

Shanxi is a landlocked province in northern China with its capital at Taiyuan. The province is one of China's most important coal-producing regions and has historically been the backbone of the country's energy and heavy industry sectors. Shanxi's economy is dominated by coal mining, coking and steel production, with vast reserves of high-quality coking coal that are essential for metallurgical processes. The province supplies a significant proportion of China's coking coal, which is used in steel manufacturing both domestically and for export. Major cities in Shanxi include Taiyuan, Datong and Changzhi, all of which have developed around mining and heavy industry. The region's coal resources have made it a strategic hub for energy security and industrial development in China. Shanxi has faced environmental challenges associated with intensive coal extraction and has been undergoing economic restructuring to diversify beyond coal dependence. The provincial government has promoted cleaner production technologies and sought to modernise its mining and metallurgical sectors. Shanxi's coking coal industry remains central to global steel supply chains, particularly in Asia.
