Ruthenium

Ruthenium is a rare, silvery-white metallic element belonging to the platinum-group metals (PGMs), with the chemical symbol Ru and atomic number 44. It is one of the six PGMs, alongside platinum, palladium, rhodium, iridium and osmium, and is primarily extracted as a by-product of platinum and nickel mining operations. South Africa and Russia are the dominant sources of global ruthenium supply, with significant production also occurring in North America. The metal exhibits exceptional hardness, high melting point and strong resistance to corrosion, making it valuable in specialised industrial applications. Ruthenium is used as a catalyst in chemical processes, including ammonia synthesis and petroleum refining, and plays a growing role in green hydrogen and fuel cell technologies. It is also employed in the electronics industry for chip resistors and hard disk drives, and in the jewellery sector as an alloying agent to harden platinum and palladium. Demand for ruthenium has increased alongside the expansion of renewable energy technologies and advanced manufacturing. The metal trades at significantly lower prices than platinum or palladium but remains subject to supply constraints owing to its scarcity and the concentrated nature of production. Ruthenium was discovered in 1844 by Russian scientist Karl Ernst Claus, who isolated it from platinum ore residues and named it after Ruthenia, the Latin word for Russia.
