Pipeline

A pipeline is a system of connected pipes used to transport fluids or gases, typically crude oil, natural gas, refined products or water, over long distances. In the oil and gas industry, pipelines form a critical part of the midstream value chain, linking upstream production sites to refineries, storage terminals and end-user markets. Pipelines may run onshore or offshore, and range from small-diameter gathering lines to large-diameter trunk lines spanning hundreds or thousands of kilometres. Construction involves specialised welding techniques, including orbital welding, TIG welding, MIG/MAG welding and flux-cored arc welding (FCAW), to join pipe sections and ensure leak-proof, high-integrity joints capable of withstanding high pressure and harsh environmental conditions. Quality control during welding is essential, since pipeline failures can cause environmental damage, safety incidents and significant financial loss. The sector relies on strict industry standards and certification processes to govern weld quality, material selection and inspection. Pipeline projects are capital-intensive and often span multiple jurisdictions, requiring extensive regulatory approval, environmental-impact assessment and right-of-way negotiation. Maintenance and corrosion management are ongoing concerns throughout a pipeline's operating life, which can extend for decades. Advances in welding automation and robotics, including orbital welding equipment, have improved consistency and reduced labour requirements on pipeline construction sites. Pipelines remain a dominant mode of transporting hydrocarbons compared with rail or road, owing to their efficiency and lower per-unit transport cost over long distances.
