NYSE (New York Stock Exchange) is the world's largest stock exchange by market capitalisation of its listed companies, located on Wall Street in New York City. The exchange provides a marketplace for buying and selling shares of publicly traded companies, bonds, exchange-traded funds and other securities. NYSE operates as a hybrid market, combining electronic trading with traditional floor-based auction methods conducted by designated market makers. It is owned and operated by Intercontinental Exchange, a Fortune 500 company that acquired the exchange in 2013. The NYSE lists more than 2 300 companies from the United States and around the world, representing a combined market capitalisation exceeding $25-trillion. Major indices tracking NYSE-listed stocks include the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the NYSE Composite Index. The exchange is regulated by the US Securities and Exchange Commission and enforces strict listing requirements, including minimum market capitalisation, share price and corporate governance standards. Companies listed on the NYSE are identified by ticker symbols of one to three letters. The exchange traces its origins to the Buttonwood Agreement signed by 24 stockbrokers in 1792, making it one of the oldest continuously operating financial institutions in the world.
