Nornickel

Nornickel is a Russian mining and metallurgical company that ranks as one of the world's largest producers of nickel and palladium. Headquartered in Moscow, the company operates primarily in Russia's Norilsk-Talnakh region in the Arctic and on the Kola Peninsula, with additional assets in other countries. The company is listed on the Moscow Exchange and is majority-owned by a consortium of Russian investors and management. Nornickel's core business encompasses the extraction, processing and refining of nickel, copper, palladium, platinum and other platinum-group metals, which are essential for stainless steel production, catalytic converters and battery technologies. The company supplies a significant share of global palladium output and is a major player in the nickel market, competing with producers in Indonesia, Canada and Australia. Nornickel employs tens of thousands of workers across its mining, smelting and refining operations. The company has faced environmental scrutiny over pollution incidents in the Arctic, including a major diesel spill in 2020 that prompted regulatory action and remediation commitments. Nornickel was established through the consolidation of Soviet-era mining assets in the 1990s and has since modernised its operations and expanded its resource base through exploration and acquisition.
