National Mining Association

The National Mining Association (NMA) is a Washington-based industry body representing companies engaged in coal, metal and mineral mining in the United States. It advocates for policies that support domestic mining, including permitting reform, critical minerals development and workforce skills initiatives. Its membership includes major producers, equipment manufacturers and related service providers across the mining value chain. The association lobbies Congress and federal agencies, including the US Department of Energy and the US State Department, on regulatory and trade matters affecting the sector. It has been vocal on reducing US reliance on China for critical minerals and rare earths, pushing for faster permitting and investment incentives. The NMA engages with successive administrations, including that of President Donald Trump, on mining policy priorities. It also promotes skills development and training programmes to address workforce shortages in the industry. The organisation publishes research and economic data highlighting mining's contribution to the US economy. It represents its members' interests in public debates over environmental regulation, land access and mineral security. The NMA traces its origins to earlier US coal and mineral trade associations that consolidated to form a unified voice for the mining sector.
