Motheo

Motheo is an open-pit copper mine located in Botswana, operated by Sandfire Resources. The facility is situated in the Kalahari Copper Belt, a region with significant copper mineralisation potential in north-western Botswana. Motheo commenced commercial production in 2023, marking Sandfire's first major operating asset in Africa and the company's expansion beyond its Australian origins. The mine produces copper concentrate through conventional open-pit mining and processing methods. Motheo forms part of Sandfire's broader Botswana copper development strategy, with the company pursuing additional projects in the region to establish a substantial copper production hub. The facility's development represented a significant capital investment and is designed to operate as a large-scale, long-life copper operation. Motheo's production contributes to Botswana's growing mining sector and diversification beyond its traditional diamond-mining economy. The mine's output is destined for international copper markets, with concentrate typically exported for further processing and refining. Sandfire has indicated plans to expand operations in the area, with Motheo serving as the foundation asset for the company's African copper portfolio.
