Minas Gerais

Minas Gerais is a state in south-eastern Brazil, with its capital at Belo Horizonte. It is one of the country's most economically significant states, ranking among the top contributors to national GDP. The state's economy is anchored by mining, manufacturing, agriculture and services. Minas Gerais is a major producer of iron ore, gold, diamonds and other minerals, and its name translates to "General Mines", reflecting its rich mineral endowment. The state is also home to significant rare-earth deposits and hosts a growing renewable-energy sector. Principal cities include Belo Horizonte, Uberlândia, Contagem and Juiz de Fora. Manufacturing activity spans steel production, automotive assembly, cement and chemicals. Agriculture remains important, with coffee, dairy and sugarcane among the leading products. Minas Gerais operates under Brazil's federal system, with an elected governor and state legislature. The state's mining heritage dates to the colonial era, when gold rushes in the eighteenth century drove settlement and economic development.
