Michigan

Michigan is a state in the Great Lakes region of the United States. Its capital is Lansing, while Detroit is its largest city and historic economic centre. The state has a population of about ten-million people and is divided into two distinct peninsulas – the Lower Peninsula and the Upper Peninsula – separated by the Straits of Mackinac. Michigan's economy was historically dominated by automotive manufacturing, with Detroit serving as the global headquarters of major car makers, earning it the nickname Motor City. The state also has significant mining heritage, particularly copper and iron ore extraction in the Upper Peninsula, which was a major industrial driver in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Today Michigan's economy has diversified to include advanced manufacturing, technology, agriculture and tourism, though automotive production remains central. The state borders four of the five Great Lakes – Superior, Michigan, Huron and Erie – giving it the longest freshwater coastline of any political subdivision in the world. Michigan is governed as a US state with an elected governor and bicameral legislature. The state's natural resources, including forests, minerals and water, continue to attract investment in mining, forestry and renewable energy projects.
