Materials Handling

Materials handling is the industrial sector concerned with the movement, storage, control and protection of materials, goods and products throughout manufacturing, distribution, consumption and disposal. The sector encompasses a wide range of equipment, systems and processes used to transport materials within facilities, between production stages, and across supply chains. Core activities include loading, unloading, sorting, stacking, palletising, conveying and warehousing of raw materials, work-in-progress and finished goods. Equipment ranges from manual tools and trolleys to sophisticated automated systems including cranes, hoists, conveyors, forklifts, automated guided vehicles and robotic systems. Materials handling is critical to ports, mines, manufacturing plants, warehouses and distribution centres, where efficient movement of bulk commodities, containers and packaged goods directly affects productivity and operating costs. The sector supports industries including mining, agriculture, logistics, construction and manufacturing. In port operations, materials handling equipment moves containers, bulk minerals and general cargo between ships, storage yards and transport modes. Advances in automation, sensor technology and data analytics are transforming traditional materials handling into integrated logistics systems that optimise throughput, reduce labour costs and improve safety. The sector's efficiency has direct implications for supply chain competitiveness and economic productivity.
