Mandela Mining Precinct

The Mandela Mining Precinct is a collaborative research and development facility focused on mining innovation and technology in South Africa. Located in Potchefstroom, North West province, the precinct serves as a hub for advancing mining practices, mineral processing and related technologies. It brings together researchers, industry partners and government institutions to address challenges facing the mining sector. The facility operates under the auspices of the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation and works closely with institutions including the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and North-West University. Key focus areas include sustainable mining practices, critical minerals beneficiation, circular economy approaches to mining waste and the development of technologies aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals. The precinct provides infrastructure and expertise for pilot-scale testing and demonstration of new mining technologies. It aims to strengthen South Africa's position in mining innovation while addressing environmental and social challenges associated with mineral extraction. The facility was established to create a platform where academic research can be translated into practical mining applications and to support the development of skills and technologies for the future of the mining industry.
