Jewellery

Jewellery is the industry and market segment concerned with the design, manufacture, distribution and retail of personal ornaments and adornments, typically made from precious metals and gemstones. The sector encompasses rings, necklaces, bracelets, earrings, brooches and other decorative items worn for personal adornment, cultural expression or as symbols of status and wealth. Gold, platinum and silver are the principal metals used, often set with diamonds, coloured gemstones, pearls and other precious materials. The industry spans luxury houses, independent designers, mass-market retailers and artisan workshops, serving markets from bridal and fine jewellery to fashion and costume pieces. Major consumer markets include the United States, China, India and the Middle East, with demand driven by weddings, gifting occasions, investment buying and self-purchase. The jewellery trade is closely linked to mining and cutting centres, with significant manufacturing hubs in Italy, India, Thailand and China. Retail channels range from flagship boutiques and department stores to online platforms, which have grown rapidly in recent years. The sector is sensitive to commodity price movements, consumer confidence and cultural trends, and plays a significant role in the global demand for gold and diamonds. Jewellery has been crafted and worn across civilisations for thousands of years, evolving from ancient talismans and royal regalia to a global industry valued at hundreds of billions of dollars annually.
