Hong Kong

Hong Kong is a special administrative region of the People's Republic of China, located on the southern coast of the country at the mouth of the Pearl River Delta. The territory comprises Hong Kong Island, the Kowloon Peninsula, the New Territories and over 200 offshore islands, with a total area of about 1 100 square kilometres. Hong Kong has a population of approximately 7.5-million people and is one of the world's most densely populated areas. The region operates under the "one country, two systems" principle, maintaining its own legal system, currency (the Hong Kong dollar, HKD), and economic framework separate from mainland China, a status established when the United Kingdom handed sovereignty back to China in 1997. Hong Kong is a major global financial centre and one of the world's leading international trading hubs, with a highly developed free-market economy characterised by low taxation, minimal government intervention and an established international financial market. The territory is home to the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, one of the largest equity markets in the world by market capitalisation, and serves as a critical gateway for capital flows between China and international markets. Key economic sectors include financial services, trading and logistics, professional services, tourism and increasingly technology and innovation. Hong Kong's strategic location, world-class infrastructure including one of the busiest container ports globally, and business-friendly regulatory environment have made it a preferred regional headquarters location for multinational corporations operating in Asia. The government is headed by a Chief Executive, and the territory maintains its own immigration controls and customs regime. Hong Kong's role as an international precious metals trading and refining centre, particularly for gold and silver, reflects its broader position as a critical node in global commodity markets and Asian finance.
