Grootegeluk

Grootegeluk is a large coal mine situated near Lephalale in Limpopo province, South Africa. It is owned and operated by Exxaro Resources, one of the country's biggest diversified mining companies. The mine produces both thermal coal and coking coal from a single, extensive orebody using open-pit mining methods. A substantial share of its thermal coal output supplies Eskom's adjacent Medupi power station, making Grootegeluk a strategically important link in South Africa's electricity generation supply chain. The mine also produces metallurgical and semi-soft coking coal for domestic and export markets, with product moved partly by Transnet's rail network. Grootegeluk has one of the largest coal processing plants in the country, reflecting the complexity of beneficiating coal of varying quality from the deposit. Its scale and long life-of-mine have made it central to Limpopo's coalfield economy and to national energy security debates. As South Africa pursues decarbonisation and diversifies its energy mix, including initiatives such as the nearby Lephalale Solar Project, the future role of coal operations like Grootegeluk features prominently in discussions about a just transition. The mine has operated for decades, expanding progressively to meet growing demand from Eskom's Limpopo-based power stations.
