European Central Bank

The European Central Bank (ECB) is the central bank responsible for monetary policy across the 20 member states of the eurozone. Headquartered in Frankfurt, Germany, it was established in 1998 as part of the process towards European monetary union and the introduction of the euro. Its primary mandate is to maintain price stability, targeting inflation at about 2% over the medium term. The bank sets key interest rates, manages the eurozone's foreign reserves and oversees the issuance of euro banknotes. It also plays a central role in banking supervision within the Single Supervisory Mechanism, overseeing major eurozone banks. The ECB's Governing Council, comprising the heads of national central banks and an executive board, makes monetary policy decisions. Its actions influence global financial markets, exchange rates and capital flows, including to emerging markets such as South Africa. The bank operates independently of national governments and European Union political institutions, a feature intended to preserve credibility in its inflation-fighting mandate. Alongside the US Federal Reserve, Bank of Japan and Bank of England, it is regarded as one of the world's most influential central banks. Its decisions on interest rates and quantitative easing programmes are closely watched by investors and policymakers worldwide, given the size of the eurozone economy.
