Duma Boko

Duma Boko is the President of Botswana, having taken office in 2024. His government is pursuing economic diversification away from Botswana's traditional reliance on diamond mining, which has suffered from weak global prices and competition from lab-grown stones, towards critical minerals such as copper, gold, graphite, iron-ore and uranium, as well as renewable energy. Under Boko, Botswana has sought closer ties with Gulf states, signing mineral exploration, oil storage and renewable-energy cooperation agreements with Oman in 2026, including a 500 MW solar power plant project. His administration has also engaged France's Orano on uranium prospecting and expanded mining cadastre systems to attract exploration investment. Boko has pushed for Botswana, which holds a 15% stake in De Beers and supplies about 70% of its rough diamond output through the Debswana joint venture, to acquire a majority shareholding in the company as Anglo American moves to divest its holding, a position that has put Botswana in competing interest with Angola over control of De Beers. He maintains close diplomatic relations with South Africa through the Bi-National Commission, covering trade, energy, migration and infrastructure cooperation. Boko also represented Botswana in mourning the death of former President Festus Mogae in 2025.
