Dominic LeBlanc

Dominic LeBlanc is a Canadian Liberal politician who currently serves as Minister responsible for Canada-US trade in Prime Minister Mark Carney's cabinet, a role he has held since March 2025 after a brief stint as finance minister. A parliamentary veteran from New Brunswick first elected in 2000, LeBlanc has deep personal ties to the Trudeau family, having been close to Justin Trudeau since childhood. Under Trudeau he rotated through senior cabinet posts including public safety, intergovernmental affairs and finance minister, often deployed to manage sensitive files and negotiations with political opponents. Following Donald Trump's re-election as US President, LeBlanc became Canada's key interlocutor with Washington on tariffs, engaging regularly with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick. He has led Canada's side in negotiations over steel, aluminium and automotive tariffs, disputes over forced-labour duties, and the broader renegotiation of the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement. He recurs in coverage as the public face of Canada's trade diplomacy during a period of sustained tariff tension with the United States. He was briefly considered a contender to succeed Trudeau as Liberal leader and prime minister before Carney won that race in 2025.
