Daniel Chapo

Daniel Chapo is a Mozambican politician who became President of Mozambique in January 2025. He is a member of Frelimo, the party that has governed Mozambique since independence in 1975. Chapo previously served as Governor of Inhambane Province, a role in which he gained recognition for his administrative capabilities and focus on economic development. He was selected as Frelimo's presidential candidate for the October 2024 general election, representing a generational shift in the party's leadership. Chapo won the election, succeeding Filipe Nyusi, who had completed two terms as president. His presidency comes at a critical time for Mozambique's mining and energy sectors, with major projects in coal, graphite, natural gas and gemstones requiring policy stability and investment certainty. Chapo has emphasised the need to attract foreign investment, improve infrastructure and ensure that resource extraction benefits local communities. His administration faces challenges including managing the country's natural resource wealth, addressing security concerns in northern Mozambique and fostering economic diversification. Chapo's leadership will be closely watched by international mining companies operating in Mozambique, including those involved in graphite production for the electric vehicle battery supply chain.
