Danantara

Danantara is an Indonesian state sovereign wealth and investment fund established to consolidate the management of the country's state-owned enterprises and natural resource assets. It operates under the authority of the Indonesian government, with backing from President Prabowo Subianto's administration, and is intended to channel returns from state companies into strategic investments and development projects. The fund's mandate spans key sectors of the Indonesian economy, including mining, energy and commodities, reflecting Indonesia's status as a major producer of nickel, tin, copper, bauxite, thermal coal and palm oil. Danantara has taken an interest in major resource operations in the country, including engagement with Freeport Indonesia, the local unit of global miner Freeport-McMoRan. Its structure is modelled on other sovereign wealth vehicles that pool state assets to improve efficiency and generate higher returns than fragmented state ownership. The fund works alongside Indonesian financial regulators, including the Financial Services Authority (OJK), in overseeing compliance and governance standards for the entities under its umbrella. Danantara is closely associated with the Prabowo government's broader push to strengthen state control over strategic industries and to capture greater value from Indonesia's commodity wealth. Officials and executives linked to state enterprises, such as Freeport Indonesia's Tony Wenas, have engaged with the fund as part of this restructuring drive. Danantara was established in the mid-2020s as a centrepiece of Indonesia's economic policy under Prabowo, drawing both domestic and international attention for its scale and ambition.
