Coke

Coke is a solid carbonaceous material derived from the destructive distillation of low-ash, low-sulphur bituminous coal in the absence of air. The process, known as coking, drives off volatile components and leaves behind a porous, carbon-rich residue with high calorific value and mechanical strength. Coke is an essential input in the production of iron and steel, where it serves both as a fuel and as a reducing agent in blast furnaces, converting iron ore into molten iron. The quality of coke—measured by factors such as ash content, sulphur levels, coke strength after reaction, and size distribution—directly affects the efficiency and output of steelmaking operations. Metallurgical coke, the grade used in blast furnaces, is produced from coking coal, a specific type of bituminous coal with suitable coking properties. China is the world's largest producer and consumer of coke, followed by India, Japan and the European Union. Coke is traded on commodity exchanges including the Dalian Commodity Exchange in China, where it is a key benchmark for the steel supply chain. Prices are closely linked to those of coking coal and iron ore, and fluctuate with steel demand, environmental policy and supply disruptions. The coking process also yields valuable by-products such as coal tar, benzene and coke oven gas. Environmental concerns around emissions from coke ovens have driven regulatory tightening and technological improvements in major producing regions.
