Burnstone

Burnstone is a gold mine located in Mpumalanga province, South Africa. The facility forms part of the historic Witwatersrand gold-mining region, specifically within the eastern extension of the gold reef system. Burnstone is operated by West Wits Mining, a company focused on developing gold assets in the Witwatersrand Basin. The mine represents one of several projects aimed at extracting gold from the deeper and more challenging ore bodies that characterise the region's geology. Operations at Burnstone involve underground mining methods suited to the narrow reef structures typical of South African gold deposits. The facility contributes to the broader gold-mining sector in Mpumalanga, a province better known for coal production but which also hosts gold and platinum resources. Burnstone's development reflects ongoing efforts to maintain South Africa's position as a significant gold producer despite the maturity of many Witwatersrand deposits. The mine's workforce requires specialised skills in underground mining, an area of focus for skills development initiatives in the South African mining industry. Burnstone was brought into production as part of West Wits Mining's strategy to revive and develop gold assets in the region.
