Bogolo Kenewendo

Bogolo Kenewendo is Botswana's Minister of Minerals and Energy, appointed to the post by President Duma Boko in November 2024. In this role she oversees the country's diamond, mining and power sectors, and has been the government's lead voice on negotiations with Anglo American over the sale of its 85% stake in De Beers, pressing for Botswana to increase its own 15% holding and secure control over the national diamond asset and its marketing chain. She has also represented Botswana at international diamond industry gatherings, including the World Federation of Diamond Bourses' President's Meeting in New York and the signing of the Luanda Accord supporting natural diamond promotion, where she received an honorary lifetime membership award. Kenewendo oversees Botswana's 50% stake in Debswana, its joint diamond-mining venture with De Beers, and has addressed the fate of a proposed, unfinalised stake acquisition in Belgian gem trader HB Antwerp first mooted under the previous administration. Beyond diamonds, she manages Botswana's energy portfolio, dealing with recurring breakdowns at the Morupule B coal-fired power station, rising electricity-import costs from South Africa's Eskom, and plans for new baseload coal and renewable-energy capacity. Her position places her at the centre of Botswana's efforts to assert sovereignty over its diamond value chain amid a global downturn in diamond demand and competition for De Beers from suitors including Angola.
