Beatrix

Beatrix is an underground gold mine situated near Welkom in the Free State province of South Africa. It forms part of Sibanye-Stillwater's South African gold operations, alongside Driefontein and Kloof. The mine extracts gold-bearing ore from deep-level reef structures typical of the Witwatersrand Basin, one of the world's most significant gold-producing regions. Beatrix has historically contributed meaningfully to South Africa's gold output and to regional employment in the Free State goldfields. Its operations involve conventional deep-level mining methods, requiring substantial labour and safety management given the depth and geological complexity of the ore body. The mine has faced the typical challenges of ageing South African gold assets, including declining grades, rising costs and safety concerns associated with deep-level mining. Sibanye-Stillwater has periodically reviewed the mine's shafts for restructuring, closure or care-and-maintenance status as part of broader portfolio optimisation.
