Augmented Reality

Augmented reality is a technology that overlays digital information, images, or interactive elements onto the real-world environment, typically viewed through a smartphone, tablet, or specialised headset. Unlike virtual reality, which creates an entirely immersive digital environment, augmented reality enhances the physical world by adding computer-generated content that users can see and interact with in real time. The technology works by using cameras, sensors, and processing algorithms to identify the user's surroundings and position, then rendering relevant digital content that appears anchored to specific locations or objects in the physical space. Augmented reality has found applications across numerous sectors, including retail, where customers can visualise products in their homes before purchase, healthcare, where surgeons can overlay diagnostic imaging onto patients during procedures, and education, where interactive 3D models enhance learning experiences. In industrial and mining contexts, augmented reality enables technicians to access equipment manuals, schematics, and maintenance instructions hands-free whilst working on machinery, improving safety and efficiency. The technology also supports remote assistance, allowing experts to guide on-site workers through complex tasks by annotating their field of view in real time. Major technology companies and industrial firms have invested heavily in augmented reality platforms, developing both consumer-facing applications and enterprise solutions. Adoption has accelerated with improvements in mobile processing power, camera quality, and the development of lightweight wearable devices. The technology is increasingly integrated with artificial intelligence and Internet of Things systems to deliver context-aware information and predictive insights. Augmented reality emerged from research in the 1960s and gained commercial traction in the 2010s with the proliferation of smartphones and advances in computer vision.
