Artisanal Mining

Artisanal mining is small-scale, labour-intensive mineral extraction typically carried out by individuals, families or informal groups using basic tools and techniques. The sector operates largely outside formal regulatory frameworks and industrial mining structures, though efforts to formalise it have increased in recent decades. Artisanal mining is prevalent across sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America and parts of Asia, where it provides livelihoods for millions of people, particularly in rural and economically marginalised communities. Miners typically extract high-value minerals such as gold, diamonds, cobalt, tantalum and gemstones, often working in hazardous conditions with limited safety equipment or environmental controls. The sector faces significant challenges including unsafe working practices, child labour, environmental degradation, lack of legal tenure and exploitation by middlemen. Artisanal mining also intersects with conflict and governance issues in some regions, where informal supply chains can fund armed groups or bypass state revenue collection. Governments, international organisations and mining companies have developed initiatives to formalise artisanal mining, improve safety and integrate artisanal miners into legal supply chains. In the Democratic Republic of Congo, artisanal cobalt and copper mining coexists alongside industrial operations, creating complex social and economic dynamics. The sector's economic contribution is substantial, accounting for a significant share of global production of certain minerals, though precise figures are difficult to establish due to its informal nature.
