Porto Marghera graphite processing hub, Italy

Name of the Project
Porto Marghera graphite processing hub.
Location
Alkeemia's chemical manufacturing complex at the Porto Marghera industrial port, in Italy.
Project Owner/s
Alkeemia (51%) and International Graphite (49%), through a joint venture.
Project Description
The project entails the development of a graphite processing hub at Alkeemia's established chemical manufacturing site. It will combine International Graphite's downstream graphite-processing expertise and intellectual property with Alkeemia's land, infrastructure, permitting capability, workforce and chemical-processing platform.
The first phase will comprise a fully enclosed micronising facility, designed to produce about 10 000 t/y of processed graphite products. The selected equipment has capacity of up to 10 800 t/y while the technical and financial evaluation uses a base-case production rate of 10 500 t/y.
The facility will include two micronising lines, each capable of producing about 4 700 t/y of 45 micrometre (µm) product, and a jet mill capable of producing about 1 300 t/y of 5 µm product. Graphite concentrate will be received in bulk bags, stored under cover, milled and classified, and packaged for dispatch.
The operation is intended to produce standard- and high-purity graphite products for industrial, energy-storage, advanced-manufacturing and defence applications. It will use graphite concentrate sourced from third-party suppliers and imported through Porto Marghera.
The joint venture facility will be co-located with Alkeemia's planned graphite-purification facilities, providing a potential pathway to higher-purity products.
A second development phase could expand processing capacity to about 15 000 t/y through a nine-month construction programme funded from joint venture cash flow.
This expansion is not included in the current evaluation.
Potential Job Creation
Not stated. Alkeemia is expected to provide the operational workforce, with only limited additional recruitment anticipated.
Net Present Value/Internal Rate of Return
Not stated.
Based on current market inputs and production of 10 500 t/y, the evaluation provides a 12-month snapshot of A$40.2-million in project sales revenue; A$15.8-million in all-in sustaining costs; and A$24.4-million in earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation.
International Graphite's 50% profit share equates to A$20.1-million in revenue, A$7.9-million in all-in sustaining costs and A$12.2-million in earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation.
Capital Expenditure
International Graphite's capital contribution is estimated at A$12-million. This comprises A$8.8-million for the plant and equipment, freight, installation, growth allowance and contingency; A$3-million for construction management, owners' costs and first fills; and A$200 000 for other costs. Alkeemia will contribute access to the project site and provide or arrange permitting, warehousing, laboratory and control-room services, waste-management systems, logistics, construction management and the operational workforce.
Planned Start/End Date
A final investment decision is targeted for the third quarter of 2026, subject to funding. Construction is also planned to start in the third quarter of 2026 and is expected to take about 12 months. Building and operating permits are expected in the second half of 2026. First production is targeted for the second half of 2027, followed by an estimated 18-month ramp-up to full production.
Latest Developments
International Graphite and Alkeemia entered into a binding joint venture and shareholders' agreement in May 2026 to build, own and operate the Porto Marghera facility.
On June 17, 2026, International Graphite released the results of its technical and financial evaluation, confirming the proposed initial plant configuration, A$12-million capital requirement and base-case production of 10 500 t/y. Alkeemia has started arranging the required building and operating permits.
Project-level financing discussions are continuing with corporate advisers, cornerstone investors and potential European Union critical-minerals funding programmes, with an emphasis on limiting shareholder dilution.
Testwork on more than 1 200 kg of graphite concentrate has produced products within target specifications and informed the process flowsheet, equipment selection and cost estimates. Alkeemia has also achieved purification grades exceeding 99.9% total graphitic carbon on a range of concentrate samples.
Key Contracts, Suppliers and Consultants
BatteryLimits Pty Ltd and Pro-Graphite GmbH (graphite-processing technical consultants). Alkeemia will manage permitting, construction and operations under agreements to be completed before the final investment
decision.
