Aerospace

Aerospace is the industry concerned with the design, development, manufacture, operation and maintenance of aircraft, spacecraft and related systems and equipment. The sector encompasses both aeronautics, which deals with flight within Earth's atmosphere, and astronautics, which involves travel beyond the atmosphere. Key activities include the production of commercial and military aircraft, helicopters, satellites, launch vehicles, missiles and defence systems, as well as the manufacture of engines, avionics, navigation systems and other components. Major aerospace companies operate globally, with significant concentrations in North America, Europe and increasingly in Asia. The industry is characterised by high capital intensity, long development cycles, stringent safety and regulatory requirements, and close integration with government defence and space programmes. Aerospace manufacturing supports extensive supply chains spanning materials, electronics, precision engineering and advanced composites. The sector is a significant driver of technological innovation, contributing to advances in materials science, propulsion, automation and digital systems. Demand is shaped by airline fleet renewal, defence budgets, space exploration initiatives and emerging markets for unmanned aerial vehicles and commercial space services. The industry faces ongoing challenges including cyclical demand, geopolitical factors, environmental pressures to reduce emissions, and the need for continuous investment in research and development.
