Women's Day: Engen programme helps eNanda woman turn her IT dream into reality

Growing up in eNanda, Zimasa Pretty Mbhem dreamed of building a career in technology. Today, the Durban CBD resident is turning that dream into reality thanks to determination, hard work and the support of Engen's Global Citizen Development Programme (EGCDP).
The recent ICT graduate is one of a growing number of young women proving that the technology sector offers exciting opportunities for those willing to learn, persevere and embrace new challenges.
As South Africa celebrates Women's Day, Zimasa's journey highlights the importance of creating pathways for women into science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) careers, where women remain underrepresented.
Zimasa recently completed the nationally recognised IT Technical Support (NQF Level 4) qualification through the EGCDP, graduating in February this year.
She subsequently completed a short internship at technology solutions company, Thusa, where she gained valuable workplace experience and further developed her technical skills. Armed with an accredited qualification and valuable workplace experience, she is now eager to secure a permanent role where she can continue growing her skills and contribute to South Africa's digital economy.
"I'm looking for my next golden opportunity. I'm excited to use the new skills I've gained, continue learning and make a meaningful contribution," she says.
The year-long programme equips unemployed young people with industry relevant digital and technical skills through a combination of classroom learning and workplace experience. Learners complete accredited qualifications while gaining practical exposure that prepares them for employment in South Africa's growing digital economy.
Since its launch in 2023, the EGCDP has helped bridge the gap between education and employment by providing accredited ICT qualifications together with practical workplace experience. Graduates have progressed into permanent employment, internships, entrepreneurship and further studies. For Zimasa, the programme provided far more than technical knowledge.
"What I enjoy most is learning practical skills, gaining knowledge, work experience and growing in confidence," she explains.
She believes the qualification has given her the foundation needed to enter the ICT sector.
"This course has equipped me with the technical knowledge, practical skills and confidence needed to secure an opportunity in the IT industry. I hope to continue building my experience in the ICT sector, develop my skills further and build a strong foundation for my career."
Like many students, the journey was not without challenges.
"The most difficult part was balancing my studies with other responsibilities, but it taught me discipline and strong time management skills," she says.
Engen CSI Manager, Olwethu Mdabula says empowering young women through education and skills development is essential to building inclusive economic growth.
"Through the Global Citizen Development Programme, we are helping to equip young people with the skills, confidence and practical workplace experience needed to pursue meaningful careers in the ICT sector. We are particularly encouraged to see more young women entering technology and building successful careers in this important field."
Engen Skills Development Facilitator, Pontsho Matshediso says equipping young women with future ready digital skills is critical as technology continues to reshape the world of work.
"Women's Day is a reminder that talent knows no gender. When young women are given access to quality education, practical workplace experience and the confidence to pursue careers in ICT, they don't just change their own futures, they help build a stronger, more innovative South Africa."
As she looks ahead, Zimasa hopes to become a professional IT specialist while continuing to develop her skills throughout her career.
Her message to other young women this Women's Day is simple but powerful.
"I want to encourage every woman to believe in herself, never stop chasing her dreams, and always remember that her voice, strength and determination matter."
For Zimasa, Women's Day is more than a celebration. "It is a reminder of the importance of equality, respect and creating opportunities for women and girls to reach their full potential."
Zimasa's story demonstrates how access to quality education, practical training and industry support can unlock opportunities for young women, opening doors to careers that once seemed out of reach.
As more women like Zimasa pursue careers in technology, they are helping build a more inclusive digital economy while inspiring the next generation of girls to dream bigger.
