JSE- and NYSE-listed metals mining company has announced that two employees have died in an incident at its Kloof 8 shaft on May 3.

During preparations for a routine, scheduled shaft inspection, an inspection platform detached from the main winder conveyance, causing the inspection platform to uncontrollably descend down the shaft, which resulted in the fatal injury of two contractor employees, the company explains.

A full investigation into the circumstances of the incident is under way and, in line with regulatory requirements, all relevant stakeholders, including organised labour and the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources, have been notified.

The families and colleagues of the deceased are receiving counselling and the families will be provided with support during this difficult time.

The board and management of Sibanye-Stillwater extend their heartfelt condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of the deceased.

While the incident did not cause damage to the shaft infrastructure, shaft operation has been halted while investigations are ongoing, Sibanye-Stillwater says.

Kloof is an intermediate to ultradeep-level gold mine, located west of Johannesburg.
