Southern Africa's Gas Challenge: The Next Step Is Getting Energy to Market
This article has been supplied and will be available for a limited time only on this website.
Southern Africa has significant natural gas potential, with major LNG developments in Mozambique, emerging domestic resources and growing international interest in the region's energy sector.
However, LNG Hub, a South African energy infrastructure developer, believes the next challenge extends beyond resource discovery to the practical requirements of commercialising, transporting and distributing gas to the industries that need it.
South Africa already has an established industrial gas market, but declining traditional pipeline supplies from southern Mozambique are creating uncertainty for industrial users.
The challenge is therefore not simply identifying alternative gas sources, but developing the infrastructure and commercial arrangements required to deliver reliable supply.
From resources to infrastructure
Connecting natural gas resources with industrial demand requires an integrated value chain that includes import facilities, storage, regasification, transport, pipeline infrastructure and downstream distribution.
This infrastructure is particularly important in Southern Africa, where industrial demand is concentrated in established economic centres, while gas resources and potential import locations may be geographically distant.
LNG Hub's proposed Import Regasification Distribution Depot (IRDD) in Richards Bay, which has received environmental authorisation, forms part of its strategy to develop infrastructure capable of connecting international LNG supply with South African industrial markets.
The proposed facility is intended to support a broader distribution network, including opportunities to supply customers beyond conventional pipeline infrastructure.
International partnerships supporting local capability
LNG Hub's development strategy is further supported by its relationship with Afrojoule Energy Holdings and Türkiye-based Naturelgaz.
Afrojoule acquired a 30.5% interest in LNG Hub, while Naturelgaz's majority investment in Afrojoule established an indirect shareholding relationship.
Naturelgaz brings international experience in industrial LNG and CNG distribution, transportable gas systems and virtual-pipeline solutions.
These capabilities are particularly relevant to developing flexible gas distribution networks capable of reaching industrial customers without direct pipeline access.
Connecting supply with demand
As South Africa considers domestic production, regional gas resources and international LNG imports, the development of flexible infrastructure will be essential to creating a commercially viable and resilient gas market.
For LNG Hub, the opportunity lies in helping establish the infrastructure, technical capabilities and partnerships required to connect these different supply sources with industrial demand.
The question is no longer simply where the gas will come from, but how it will reach the industries that need it.
