Impala Rustenburg has named Sunrise View Secondary School learner, Keamogetswe Rametsi, the third recipient of the Peter William Davey Award, an annual recognition of academic excellence in the schools serving the company's mine communities.

The award is given to the top-achieving Grade 10 in Maths and Science to encourage youth in our mine communities to strive for academic excellence as they advance to their matric year. Keamogetswe achieved 84% in Mathematics and 80% in Physical Science, the strongest performance among the Grade 10 learners considered for this year's award, earning her the Peter Davey trophy and a laptop.

The Peter William Davey award was established in 2024 to celebrate the legacy of Davey, a respected figure in the mining industry and long-standing board member of the Implats Group until his passing in 2023. Davey was deeply committed to education and giving back to others. He began his career as a mining engineer at Impala Rustenburg and went on to build a deep knowledge and wide network across the mining and financial sectors.

Moses Motlhageng, Chief Executive at Impala Rustenburg said, “Congratulations to Keamogetswe on this fantastic achievement. Mathematics and Physical Science are among the most demanding subjects in the school curriculum, and they are also the subjects that open the widest range of doors for a young person in this country. What Keamogetswe has achieved took years of consistent work.”

Now in its third year, the award has become a fixture in the region's academic calendar. The floating trophy encourages healthy competition among schools in the area, with the honour passing from one institution to another as new recipients are named.

“We present this award because we want every learner in our mine community schools to know that this is within their reach too, regardless of where they start,” said Motlhageng.

Accepting the award, Keamogetswe Rametsi said, “Thank you to Impala Rustenburg for this award. I hope to inspire other learners to keep going and remind them not to give up even if it’s not easy.”

The award forms part of Impala Rustenburg's broader investment programme in education across its mine communities. Through its school-support initiatives, the company works with primary and secondary schools in the area, providing academic support that includes Saturday and supplementary classes in Mathematics and Physical Science for Grade 12 learners, mentoring for young teachers, school infrastructure improvements, as well as leadership and governance training. Impala Rustenburg also awards bursaries each year to matriculants from its mine communities pursuing tertiary studies in engineering, science, accounting, teaching, nursing and related fields.
