JSE-listed energy and chemicals group Sasol reported that its Secunda Operations, in Mpumalanga, achieved its highest annual production in the past five years during the 2026 financial year to June 30.

In a statement to shareholders, Sasol attributed the performance to the implementation of a coal destoning project, as well as increased natural gas availability and stable operations at Secunda during the fourth quarter.

During the year, Sasol completed the R700-million repurposing of the Twistdraai export coal plant to deliver coal to Sasol’s Secunda Operations with a total sinks content of between 12% and 14%.

The lower level of rock fragments and other impurities in the material was designed to reduce the damage caused to Secunda’s gasifiers by low-quality coal and increase yields from the gasifiers.

The gasifiers produce synthetic-gas feedstock needed to produce fuels and chemicals at the Mpumalanga complex using the Fischer-Tropsch process.

In a business update, Sasol reported that average sinks had been kept below market guidance during the fourth quarter.

“Supported by stronger production performance and a more supportive macroeconomic backdrop during the last quarter of the financial year, the business delivered within or above our market guidance across all our production and sales metrics, demonstrating clear progress towards strengthening the foundation business,” Sasol said in the statement.

The group is scheduled to publish its results for the 2026 financial year on September 1.
