In a strategic partnership with the eMalahleni local municipality, the Nkulo Community Partnership Trust has broken ground on the R9.437-million Kwa-Guqa pipeline rehabilitation project.

This infrastructure initiative, which will see the construction of a 3 km bulk raw water pipeline serving three wards within Kwa-Guqa, in eMalahleni, aims to strengthen the resilience of the municipal water network, ensuring improved water security for households, businesses and future development within the area.

The project will be implemented over a seven- month period – from August this year until February 2027 – and its scope includes pipeline construction, pump installation and modifications, as well as the servicing and replacement of critical mechanical valves.

Its implementation is a direct response to community concerns about ageing water infrastructure and the need for more reliable water supply.

“This project represents far more than physical infrastructure. It is a foundational investment in the restoration of health, dignity and economic potential of the Kwa-Guqa community,” says Nkulo Community Partnership Trust trustee Mpumi Sithole.

In addition to delivering critical infrastructure, the project has been designed to generate local economic benefits. Fifteen temporary jobs will be created during the construction phase while local small, medium-sized and microenterprises (SMMEs) will benefit from subcontracting opportunities, particularly in areas such as plant hire, diesel supply and site security services.

The project is being undertaken by local contractor Shodo Civils, a beneficiary of Thungela’s Thuthukani enterprise and supplier development programme.

Mrhetjha Royal House Chief Nsizwa Mahlangu, representing local traditional leadership, welcomed the investment and its benefits for the community with open arms.

“Water is the lifeblood of our people and the foundation of dignity in our community. We are excited about this pipeline, not only for the reliable clean water it will bring to our households, but for the tangible hope and opportunity it offers our youth through local job creation. True development happens when our communities are included as active partners in building their own future.”

The sod-turning ceremony stands as a clear demonstration of what strategic municipal and community partnerships can achieve, eMalahleni local municipality executive mayor Councillor VJ Nhlapho adds, emphasising the importance of partnerships in addressing community priorities.

Through the investment, municipal services will be strengthened, enhancing water security and creating opportunities for local SMMEs.

The Kwa-Guqa pipeline rehabilitation project reflects the trust’s commitment to supporting community wellbeing through investments that improve essential services, stimulate local economic development and contribute to sustainable long-term growth.
