Pump solutions provider Pumps for Africa has been appointed as an authorised distributor and repairer of water technology developer Xylem’s Flygt pumps range.

Being appointed as the new Flygt distributor for Gauteng enables Pumps for Africa to quote into areas, mines and power stations where the company was previously unable to market products, says Pumps for Africa director Nic Winslow.

The appointment came about in part because of the company’s commitment to high service standards, he says, adding that the quality of the Flygt product range is a key differentiator in the market.

While many pumps companies are working to improve their offering, Flygt undertakes proactive product development, continually investing in better solutions across every field in which it operates, says Winslow.

In seeking a distributing partner, Flygt required a distributor that offers a quick turnaround time on repairs and a team of personnel able to supply a high-quality product to the end-user, which aligned with Pumps for Africa’s capabilities, he explains.

Meeting Challenges

Procurement challenges remain a reality in the mining industry, varying across mines and countries, particularly as operations seek a balance between cost-effectiveness and effective solutions, says Winslow.

As mining companies are intent on saving money, it remains challenging to demonstrate the value of innovative products compared to alternative cheaper ranges, he adds.

Despite these cost pressures being ever-present, Winslow acknowledges that more mining operations are recognising the long-term value delivered by quality products, particularly in terms of lifespan and reduced downtime.

To meet anticipated demand, Pumps for Africa intends to hold stock of the Flygt range and offer a 24-hour service to all clients, though Winslow acknowledges that stock levels may be adjusted as market conditions evolve.

While Xylem will handle certain aspects of after-sales support, Pumps for Africa’s field staff will play a central role in ensuring operational continuity and quality of service.

Winslow emphasises the company’s commitment to open dialogue with customers, ensuring that customer requirements are met and adjustments are made, where applicable.

To introduce its customers to the Flygt range, as well as its other offerings, Pumps for Africa will be exhibiting at the upcoming KragDag Expo in Rayton, in Gauteng, taking place in August, as well as the Electra Mining Africa exhibition at the Johannesburg Expo Centre, taking place in September.
