Australian miner Pilbara Minerals on Friday announced the completion of construction for Train 2 of the lithium hydroxide monohydrate chemical facility being developed in a joint venture (JV) with Posco in South Korea.

Pilbara holds an 18% equity stake in the project, which will produce 43 000 t/y of battery-grade lithium hydroxide.

Under a long-term offtake agreement, Pilbara will supply spodumene concentrate from its Pilgangoora operation in Western Australia to the facility.

Ramp-up of Train 2 is expected to be achieved within 12 to 18 months of the completion of commissioning. Ramp-up of production for Train 1 started in 2024 with certification for the battery-grade lithium hydroxide monohydrate under way with multiple South Korean customers.

The facility places the Pilbara and Posco JV as one of the few lithium chemicals producers outside of China.

The completion ceremony was attended by South Korean Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, Posco chairperson Chang In-Hwa and Pilbara nonexecutive director Steve Scudamore.
