Automotive manufacturer Chery Group South Africa will produce the new Omoda C4 at its Rosslyn plant, in Gauteng, from the third quarter of 2027.

In the meantime, it will fully import Omoda C4 units from early 2027 until local production starts.

The first units off the Rosslyn line will be hybrids, with petrol and fully electric versions to join the range at a later date.

The C4, unveiled in April 2025, forms part of Chery Group’s strategy to grow its local manufacturing footprint at Rosslyn, after it acquired the former Nissan facility earlier this year.

The plant is currently being recommissioned, with production scheduled to start in the second half of 2027.

“The first roll-out plan for Omoda at the Rosslyn plant will be the Omoda C4 hybrid. We will also have hybrid and battery electric vehicle (BEV) versions, with the BEV version and petrol derivative to be introduced at a later stage,” says Chery Group South Africa CEO Tony Liu.

Launching first as a hybrid electric vehicle, the locally built C4 signals Chery Group’s confidence that South African uptake of new energy vehicles is set to gain momentum.

Rosslyn’s production line-up will later expand to include battery-electric and internal combustion engine variants, which broaden the options available to local buyers.

The Omoda C4 will join a growing roster of models set for local assembly at Rosslyn, including the Chery Tiggo 4, Jaecoo J5, Jetour T-Series and the forthcoming Chery Grootman double-cab bakkie.

Chery Group’s shift to local manufacturing represents a major transition from importer to producer in South Africa, with positive implications for local assembly, supplier development and job creation in Gauteng’s automotive sector, the company says.
