Global electric motor manufacturer WEG and active magnetic bearing (AMB) systems supplier SpinDrive recently announced a strategic partnership aimed at enabling industrial customers to achieve higher efficiency, oil-free operation, lower maintenance, and improved condition monitoring capabilities.

The collaboration will integrate SpinDrive’s AMBs and built-in Internet of Things (IoT) condition monitoring into WEG’s electric motor offering, leading towards a new category of electric motors designed for high‑volume industrial applications. The collaboration promises higher efficiency and reliability, while also supporting industrial decarbonisation by reducing energy losses, eliminating oil systems, and lowering lifecycle emissions.

“By combining SpinDrive’s expertise in active magnetic bearings with our global electric motor portfolio, we are taking an important step toward increasing energy efficiency, reducing environmental impacts, and supporting our customers on their journey toward more sustainable operations,” said WEG VP: industrial motors Rodrigo Fumo.

The use of active magnetic bearings enables higher rotational speeds and increased power density, allowing more compact motor designs with a significantly reduced footprint, which is particularly useful for space‑constrained and next‑generation installations.

The partnership aims to serve applications that have oil contamination constraints, machines that work in harsh environments where higher reliability is needed, or where stringent efficiency mandates make the use of conventional bearing solutions unfeasible. The companies will support OEMs and industrial end-users across compressors, blowers, turbines, pumps, turbomachinery, and high-speed spindles, among other applications.

“WEG’s reach combined with our active magnetic bearing expertise and IoT condition monitoring platform, means we can now bring our technology quickly to hundreds of thousands of motor installations,” said SpinDrive CEO Janne Heikkinen.
